It will come as no surprise to our competitors and supports that many of our sponsors have stepped up to the plate to help First Responders in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Our sponsors have always generously contributed to the community in which they do business. They are just those kinds of people. The needs that have arisen following Hurricane Katrina have once again brought out these companies to help in a multitude of ways. But here are a few magnanimous gestures of help that bear special mention as examples for all.

Original SWAT Footwear, one of our title sponsors, has donated free boots to law enforcement personnel on the Gulf Coast who had their homes destroyed. While this may not seem like a big deal, but many of those police officers and firefighters along the gulf coast stayed on the job helping others when they had literally lost everything themselves except what was on their backs and feet. Some of these men and women have been on the job with little to no time off for three weeks. Many ended up with no gear or uniforms. Without fanfare, Original SWAT responded to provide free footwear for these local heroes.

Zodiac Maritime Academy Instructors volunteered to go to New Orleans to help with the rescue efforts. They took 20 Zodiac F530's and 20 Rescue Pro outboards and drove to New Orleans from Maryland where we were attached to the 82'd Airborne. They rescued over 100 people and the team is still there! After doing their rescue missions during the day, they would go to the FEMA base at night and try and do repairs on the USAR boats.

Like everyone in the First Responder community, we are thankful for all the support our sponsors provide. But we are especially proud to be associated with these quality people who set the standards for others and put their businesses fully behind their customers in times of need. Thanks from everyone!!!

URGENT - PLEASE NOTE!

As a direct result of Hurricane Katrina we have been asked to reposition our 2005 LEOPARD CHALLENGE CHAMPIONSHIPS to an earlier date of NOVEMBER 15TH/16TH, 2005, and to move our LAS VEGAS REGIONAL LEOPARD to Monday November 14th, 2005. While this was a difficult decision for us to make, this compromise will provide a space for a group from New Orleans who would otherwise have no place to go.

While we expect that most tentative competitors have not yet finalized their travel arrangements, we realize that there may be some of you out there which will be effected by this shift in dates. Should this be the case, please us at the LEOPARD , as we would like to treat your case on an individual basis. We deeply apologize for any inconvenience, and please know that we are putting forth our best efforts to make this a truly excellent event which competitors will not forget.

REVISED dates for the 2005 LEOPARD CHAMPIONSHIP:
Monday November 14th - Last Chance Regionals (Las Vegas)
Tuesday November 15th - Semi-Finals (produced for TV)
Wednesday November 16th - Finals (produced for TV)

LEOPARD CHALLENGE helps select Maryland State Trooper of the Year Award

This past Saturday, the LEOPARD CHALLENGE set up it's spots at the MCPTC as one of the criteria to be used in the selection process for this years' Maryland State Trooper of the Year. Best time on location went to Christopher Conner with a time of 1:10:32. Congratulations!

We would also like to take the opportunity to acknowledge the presence of Col. Hutchins, Superintendent of the Maryland State Police, who made a special trip for this occasion to address his Troopers and acknowledge their participation.

Finally, it wouldn't be a LEOPARD CHALLENGE in Maryland, without the participation of at least a few PG County competitors practicing up for the big Nationals coming to Vegas in November.

GOOD COMPETITION, ... EH?

NO BLOOD ... but lots of sweat and tears were seen last night at the Ontario Police College regional LEOPARD Challenge!
Many of our competitors were recruits from the BCT program at OPC, and truly experienced our course in the context of a realistic training scenario. Of those who competed with us ... some left our competition to qualify in their night time driver training scenario's ... and others ran the LEOPARD Challenge within an hour of decontaminating from pepper spray. From a training context, it made for a clear demonstration of the possible circumstances within which an officer may be engaged into a foot pursuit equation.

Top time went to Bryce Callacott of Westervelt College with 1:22:82. Top female time went to a returning champion ... Rowena Edey of Toronto Police Service, and top sworn officer went to Ben Nevin of Bruce Power NRT with a time of 1:26:67. Congratulations!

We also had newcomer Steve Stills of the RCMP run a commendable time of 1:59:01 taking 1st in the over 40 category.

Honorable mentions go to the Guelph TRU team for impressive first time runs and Westervelt College for their great teamwork and spirit.

Thanks to all our sponsors who provided prizes ..... Blue Line Rings, Original SWAT Footwear, Tac Wear Gear, Gerber Blades, Inova Light Systems, and True North Gear. Special thanks to the Ontario Police College staff and student volunteers and to Bruce Power NRT for use of their equipment and the support of their people. Check out our results page for a listing of OPC competitor results!

FYI - Due to the addition of the new long gun equation ... we will be accepting all regional competitors from the OPC challenge to qualify for the preliminaries in Vegas! Stay tuned to our website ... as we will be releasing more information later in the season.

The LEOPARD Challenge will be kicking off it’s first event for the 2005 season in conjunction with the annual U.S. Law Conference and Expo, May 25th/26th in Washington, DC!!!

In addition to recruiting new competitors, we look forward to seeing familiar faces from Prince Georges County Police Department, Washington Metro Police Department (ERT), and from the Metro Police Academy.  Last year, the regional title was taken by Sam Hooper from Prince Georges County Police with a commendable time of 1:08:68.  Congratulations Sam!  Try to hold on to that title for 2005!

Last year we challenged Holly Morris from Fox 5 Morning News to tackle the LEOPARD as one of her challenges for daredevil week.  Holly did a great job of navigating the course with a little backup from her relay partner, Lisa Garland of PGC Police!  This year we hope to attract the same attention … and will be making some challenges of our own!

This year our competition will be held from 10:00am-12:30pm Thursday April 26th. The course will be open for practice and demonstration purposes from 10am-3pm Wednesday. All competitors receive an official LEOPARD Challenge COOL MAX shirt!

The rest of the 2005 LEOPARD season to be posted shortly!

LEOPARD Instructor Seminars
As more and more departments become interested in utilizing the LEOPARD as the basis of their officer fitness programs, we will be conducting “train the trainer” LEOPARD Instructor Seminars at select police academies around the country. The purpose of these 2-day classes is to train officers to lead the LEOPARD programs in their own departments and be peer fitness leaders for other officers. If you are interested in attending a LEOPARD Instructor Seminar please contact us at 301-421-4433. A schedule of locations for LEOPARD Instructor Seminars, cost and the POI will be published shortly in LEOPARD NEWS

Bullite Training System
We will again be using the Rovatec Bullite laser training system for the LEOPARD shooting scenario in 2005. We rolled out this new technology with excellent success at the IACP and CALEA conferences last Fall. The system is the most technologically advanced laser training system on the market. It has the highest reliability and greatest flexibility of any laser training system out there. It is a great fit for the LEOPARD’s dynamic shooting requirements. Over the holidays we have even been enhancing it to make the targeting system more challenging and more interactive. In addition, officers can now buy their own personal Bullite marksmanship training system for personal use for $180. This Kit comes with a laser cartridge that will fit any caliber handgun (guaranteed for 10,000 trigger pulls!), a barrel-safe rod, and four reflective targets. It all comes in a kit the size of a band aid box. With the Bullite eye-safe laser system you can practice your marksmanship skills on the range, at home or even in your office. There is little question the Bullite will revolutionize law enforcement marksmanship training. Contact us for more information on how you can get your own Bullite marksmanship system.

Mission Statement

The mission of the LEOPARD Challenge is to provide a new paradigm for law enforcement fitness. It is also a competitive outlet for police officers and a platform that demonstrates to the public the basic physical and skill requirements of law enforcement.
